KARINA UTOMO
ARTIST SUMMARY
-
Karina Utomo is an extreme metal vocalist, composer, and co-founder of extreme metal projects Rinuwat, KILAT, and High Tension. Utomo’s vocal practice explores multi-disciplinary forms of extreme metal, experimental cross-cultural practices, and extra-normal voicing. Aspects of Utomo’s practice are informed by and interwoven with Javanese mythology and storytelling.
Utomo’s compositional practice explores the duality of intergenerational trauma and power, and tensions between tradition and rebellion. She has collaborated extensively with artists in Australia and internationally across a broad range of industrial, avant-garde improvisation, grindcore, and black metal genres in numerous forms and settings.
She has been commissioned for compositional and performance works by Curā8 which exhibited at Project 8 Gallery (VIC, AU), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary (MMCA, Seoul, Korea), Incinerator Gallery (VIC, AU), TONO (Mexico); Platform Indonesia with Rully Shabara of Senyawa (The Substation, VIC, AU); Cat Hope for the Peggy Glanville Hicks Address (Melbourne Recital Centre, Elder Conservatorium of Music, VIC, AU) and Flash Forward Festival (VIC, AU). She has performed at music and arts festivals in Australia such as Download Festival (with Slayer and Anthrax in NSW and VIC), Dark Mofo (TAS), Mona Foma (TAS), Soft Centre x VIVID, Soft Centre UNFURL (NSW), Rising Festival (Make It Up Club, VIC), Melbourne Music Week, Perth Festival (WA), OHM Festival (QLD) and the Melbourne Writers Festival (VIC) and Soundrenaline Festival in Bali, Indonesia.
Recent and developing projects include ‘Kasekten’ with Indonesian-Australian artists Juliet Burnett, Rama Parwata, Jaya Parwata, and visual artist Michaela Gleave as well as collaborative performer in artist Leyla Stevens’ work GROH GOH (Rehearsal for Rangda), Tarrawarra Biennial 2023.

Mortal Voice is a video work conceived and produced for Project 8 Gallery with Cūrā8 in 2022.
This digital apparition is currently showing at Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea as part of Watch and Chill 3.0
‘Streaming Suspense’. 12 April — 23 July 2023.
“Under the theme of suspense as a method of storytelling and imagining, Watch and Chill streams works from 23 artists in different regions, while simultaneously showcasing them in physical spaces as internationally traveling exhibitions.
The contents for both the online platform and the offline exhibition experiment with the psyche of the uncanny, abnormality, shape-shifting, mutable bodies, and contemporary implications. They are organized under five sub-topics: “Landscape under Moonlight,” “Assembly of Evidence,” “Mutable Corpus,” “Performance of the Undead,” and “Post-dystopian Worldbuilding.”
Following its offline exhibition at MMCA Seoul, Watch and Chill 3.0: Streaming Suspense is scheduled to open at the end of April at TONO Festival in Mexico City, in November at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, and in March of next year at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. The art streaming platform Watch and Chill will remain available until the final touring program concludes in April 2024.”*
Special thanks to NGV curators Timothy Moore & Amita Kirpalani for including Mortal Voice into ‘Streaming Suspense’.

MUSICAL PROJECTS
RINUWAT
-
RINUWAT is a substantive conceptual project for collaborators Karina Utomo, Rama Parwata and Mike Deslandes. Firmly steeped in Southeast Asian traditional instrumentation and notation, the trio’s ancient Javanese name translates as “to liberate oneself from a curse”. Given the depth and intensity of their compositions, that malediction does indeed demand to be extricated.
The group’s debut album, ‘Dua Naga’, carries a weight of musical intellect and amalgamated calibration that is rarely heard in contemporary outfits, let alone in the extreme metal genres that would be a graceless definition of their sound. Each member peers at a set of graduations on their instruments - Utomo’s voice is as piercingly frightening as it is poetic and mantra-like in her delivery. Parwata’s exploratory percussion that seamlessly blends Gamelan notation with bold rhythms on the drum kit and Deslandes creating sonic templates that shift between eloquent guitar narration to walls of noise and droning assaults.
The group’s first single, ‘Taring Emas’, Utomo explains:
"I approached the lyrical components of this song by... more

KILAT
KILAT, ‘Sembelih’ audio excerpt from ‘Rantai Penjinak’ Album, 2022
-
Kilat are a three piece explorative raw black metal band from Naarm / Melbourne, Australia. The group consists of artists Karina Utomo (High Tension, RINUWAT), Rama Parwata (Whitehorse, RINUWAT) and Benjamin Andrews (MY DISCO, Agents of Abhorrence, Blarke Bayer). The band formed in early 2021 after years of discussion into extreme music genre fusion and the trio's simpatico relationship with one another.
The black metal moniker is the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to describing KILAT's noise laden sound. Their first performance, 'Malam Busuk' was on November 13th at The Corner hotel in Richmond, and the band performed to a sold out crowd. They headlined a night of experimental music at MONA FOMA Festival in January, 2022 and have continued to perform to sold out crowds in Melbourne throughout the year.
The trio reference the sounds of contemporary raw black metal artists, as well as drawing influence from Nusantara and ancient Javanese imagery, script and traditions.
